The Día de los Indianos harks back to the 1960s, when an enormous wave of islanders emigrated from La Palma to find work in Cuba. When the rich emigrants returned to their home country they wore white clothes and panama hats - outfits which are copied and worn for today's celebrations.
The day starts with the official reception of these "most distinguished guests" in the Town Hall. The indianos, dressed in all their finest attire, fastidously drag themselves from the harbour, pulling inmense cardboard suitcases packed to the seams with fake money. Exuberant black ladies with nearly impossible hips, toy parrots, flat straw hats and disproportionate pieces of bijouterie stand out in the growing crowd.
